2025 is the year of (licensed) LEGO pirate sets 

After a year of LEGO Space in 2024 and Formula 1 in 2025, this year also appears to be the year of LEGO Pirates, thanks to licensed partnerships. 

While LEGO Pirates hasn't made quite as big a comeback as the likes of Castle and Classic Space in the modern portfolio, fans of the original theme and all things pirates have had a great year. This is thanks in no small part to licensed partnerships.

From the few but significant pieces of original LEGO Pirates representation throughout 2025 to the many licensed models and multiple gifts-with-purchase, here's a recap of the year in regards to all things pirates.

Original minifigures

The year started with 71048 Series 27, which featured the new Pirate Quartermaster minifigure. The extra-detailed minifigure comes with exclusive pieces, but no clear references to the original theme. This was followed up on in June with Bo’sun Will and Camilla from LEGO Pirates sets and comics back in the day. They appear in 21358 Minifigure Vending Machine.

One Piece

After a brief foray into the world of original LEGO Pirates characters, the LEGO Group turned its focus to licensed pirate franchises for the rest of the year. This started with One Piece in August, based on the Netflix adaptation of the anime and manga. Four of the five LEGO One Piece sets offer something for LEGO Pirates fans to enjoy, and the theme's minifigures have some pirate-adjacent designs. It's the most outlandish of the licensed pirate partnerships in 2025, but the LEGO group would get more familiar with the remainder of the year.

Pirates of the Carribean

September brought with it the return of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean via 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow's Pirate Ship, and the 5009609 Jack Sparrow’s Compass gift-with-purchase. As possibly the most iconic licensed pirate franchise, the new LEGO Black Pearl makes it clear that 2025 is a great year for LEGO Pirates fans.

The Goonies

The recent reveal of LEGO Ideas 21363 The Goonies and its own exclusive gift-with-purchase will continue the year of LEGO Pirates next month. Though The Goonies isn't as much of a pirate movie as Pirates of the Caribbean, pirates play a huge part in the film and the two sets. Both certainly qualify as a continuation of the year of LEGO Pirates, whether licensed or original.
