Unlike many contemporary LEGO Technic releases, this set doesn’t come with any vehicle licensing – and it uses pneumatics instead of electronics for some of its mechanical features. These design choices allow for a reasonably priced set that’s nonetheless packed with things to interact with.
Measuring 60cm long, this tow truck offers familiar functions like working steering and moving engine pistons. Of course, the real point of interest is the tow truck-specific features. You can raise the truck’s third axle – a feature of real-life tow trucks that debuts here in LEGO form – and use side-mounted gears to lower the truck’s outriggers and rotate the crane arm.
Pneumatic hoses (which work in conjunction with a pneumatic cylinder) allow you to manipulate the truck’s towing fork, as well as raise and lower (or extend and retract) the crane arm itself. You can also lower a pair of crane hooks to grab vehicles from further away.
The truck’s design means that – if it’s appropriately sized – a LEGO Technic vehicle can be attached to the truck’s towing fork. The result is a LEGO Technic set with exceptional play and display value, and (thanks to Argos) an excellent price to buy it at.
