One talented fan creator has taken on the challenge of 3D printing his own life-size LEGO Technic dune buggy, that can actually be driven.
Just when you think you’ve seen it all when to comes to fan-designed LEGO creations, along comes something new to blow your socks off. A case in point is what’s being described as an 'XXXL 3D printed dune buggy', essentially a life-size LEGO Technic project based on the classic 8845 Dune Buggy that released all the way back in 1981.
The brainchild of animatronic industry veteran Matt Denton, one of the creators and operators behind BB-8, the massive LEGO Technic dune buggy is just one of many amazing upscaled models he’s made over the last few years.
The life-size vehicle boasts 174 individual 3D printed pieces, including giant-size suspension elements, but with a few changes made to the original version. For starters, the scale is 10.42 times larger than 8845 Dune Buggy and was also modified to be a single-seater, but with the steering wheel moved to the centre.
Pitched as being ‘a cross between building a LEGO kit and assembling IKEA flatpack furniture,' the 3D printed dune buggy ended up weighing quite a lot, coming in at 102 Kg. In addition, an electric motor was added to the giant brick-built vehicle, using a belt-driven system attached to the rear axle.
Matt then took the completed dune buggy for a quick spin, during which some durability issues did pop up and he noted that he wasn’t able to get a lot of performance out of the upscaled LEGO Technic model, mostly due to the power of the engine.
