Comparing LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters to fan design

LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters has changed a lot since its original fan-designed project, so here's a closer look at what's new.

Originally designed by fan designer Maximilian Lambrecht, 21366 Floating Sea Otters sounds much the same as the first model submitted to LEGO Ideas on paper: an otter floating on brick-built water, balanced on a black display base with natural scenery like rocks and plants on it. However, the final version of the set looks a lot different, while still staying faithful to the original idea.

We've picked out some of the key changes in 21366 Floating Sea Otters in our comparison between the original fan design and the final project below.

From cartoonish to realistic

The most immediate change is to the otter itself. While Maximilian's original design featured an almost cartoon-style otter with big eyes and a rounded nose, its mouth open as if it were smiling, the final version of 21366 Floating Sea Otters leans into a more realistic version of the animal, with smaller eyes and a pointed nose.

Interestingly, the original design looks more similar to a river otter than a sea otter, with the former naturally coming with bigger eyes and similar fur colouring to Maximilian's project. The fan designer did specify his design was a sea otter, so perhaps the LEGO Group deliberately leaned into a more species-accurate version for the final product.

While speaking to LEGO Fan Media at a recent roundtable, LEGO Ideas Design Manager Jordan Scott underlined that balancing realism and cuteness was a big consideration for this set: "We've done several animals now in LEGO Ideas, including 21349 Tuxedo Cat, 21365 Orange Cat, 21342 The Insect Collection, and now with 21366 Floating Sea Otters. We've seen in Icons, with 10331 Kingfisher and 11384 Golden Retriever Puppy that we can capture that realistic expression, but in a beautiful display way.

"That led to the decision to go as realistic as we can out of LEGO bricks, but still keeping that cute factor to it, which otters naturally do just because of how expressive their mouth is, even though they have smaller eyes. That was a difference between Max's design, but I think both versions have that really cute expression. It's just done in different ways."

Sink or swim

The changes to the design of the otter don't stop at the head, either. The final iteration of the otter is floating lower in the water, with its legs protruding directly from the water and connected with what looks like ball joints, rather than connected to the body and sticking out of the water as in the first design.

The structure of the paws is also very different, made up from layered elements rather than single elements for the front paws. That makes them look more like flippers, especially for the powerful back feet that would be used for speed while swimming.

Adding to the overall cuteness of the set, an extra otter is included in 21366 Floating Sea Otters, as the pluralised name suggests. A buildable baby otter can sit on its parent's belly, built with a face that mimics the colouring and shape of the adult otter.

The inclusion adds more height to the set, as well as doubling up on how adorable the upcoming LEGO Ideas set is.

Overflowing with life

As well as the otters themselves, the base they 'float' on has also gone through some changes. Maximilian's original version was a neat rectangle, which has now evolved into a more organic rounded shape. The transparent bricks that represent water overflow over the black base in a couple of spots, adding to the natural feel of the set.

The plants and rocks have also been adapted, with more complex buildable reeds and plants that help to add greater depth and diversity of colour to 21366 Floating Sea Otters. Rather than the red and brown tones of the plants in the original fan design, the final set has more green shades, contrasting with the colour of the otters and adding fresh pops of colour to the largely blue and brown model.

All in all, the changes made to 21366 Floating Sea Otters transform it from a more artistic interpretation of an otter and into a more realistic tribute to the animal, whether that's in the recreation of the otter itself or the scenery surrounding it. It follows a trend of leaning more into realism, not just in Ideas but other themes, and pays off with an authentic display model that still offers a healthy dose of cuteness for animal fans.

LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters is available to pre-order now ahead of its launch on March 1, retailing at £99.99 in the UK, $119.99 in the US, and €109.99 in Europe.
