Five things we want from LEGO Super Mario Kart 2025 sets

Five things we want from LEGO Super Mario Kart 2025 sets

With the LEGO Super Mario theme hitting the race track in 2025, here are five things we definitely want Mario Kart sets to deliver.

It’s officially MAR10 Day 2024 and fans of Nintendo’s Koopa-bashing plumber certainly have plenty to celebrate. LEGO Insiders can already try winning a bundle of LEGO Super Mario sets in a special sweepstake reward and claim double points on all models available from the theme, plus three new builds have also just been revealed.

In addition, Mario Kart will officially be coming to the LEGO Super Mario theme sometime in 2025, as announced in a surprise teaser video from TLG. At this stage we only have that tentative release date and an outline of a brick-built kart to go on, but the potential for adding a racing element to the video game theme could be huge.

However, that’s certainly not going to stop us speculating about what a LEGO Super Mario Kart sub-theme might look like. With that in mind, here are the five things we want to see from any such sets when they cross the finish line in 2025.

5 – Multiple karts

With 28 karts, 17 bikes, 21 wheels and 14 gliders available in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe alone, there’s certainly plenty of potential for a wide range of brick-built LEGO Super Mario vehicles. In fact, the ability to customise and rebuild rides could well be a unique and new creative selling point for the sub-theme.

4 – New characters

With only three interactive figures currently available in the LEGO Super Mario theme, the time feels right for more characters from Nintendo’s video game to be added to that line-up. So bring on the likes of Wario, Waluigi, King Boo and more drivers, with the varying sizes and weights of the characters factoring into any possible play mechanics.

3 – Buildable tracks

Unlike existing LEGO Super Mario playsets that feature buildings or location playsets, any upcoming Mario Kart models will need something to actually race on. Buildable tracks could offer up all sorts of exciting options, from power-up items to scan, obstacles to be avoided, jumps to make and the start and finish lines to cross.

2 – New item pieces

We’ve already seen one new element added to the LEGO Friends theme that would be a perfect Mario Kart piece. 42604 Heartlake City Shopping Mall comes with a banana peel that could be included in LEGO Super Mario sets to represent the classic item and dropped behind your vehicle. Instead of stickered blocks to scan, let’s also see dedicated red, green and blue shells, plus coins, Bob-ombs and Bullet Bill pieces too.

1 – LEGO Super Mario Kart minifigures

Okay, this one’s a bit of a long shot, we know. There have been rumblings of potential LEGO Super Mario minifigures for some time now, but it’s unlikely that’ll be a direction the Mario Kart sub-theme will head in.

The current Mario interactive figure is shown in the teaser video for the 2025 sets, so it looks like fans will be stuck with that version of the plumber, Luigi and Peach for quite a while to come, although rumours suggest new USB versions of the existing characters may at least be on the way at some point.
