LEGO BrickHeadz 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog review

The first LEGO BrickHeadz set based on SEGA’s iconic blue blur speeds into view with the arrival of 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog.

It’s been a big year for Sonic the Hedgehog in 2023, with a full LEGO theme dedicated to the spiky video game icon having launched in August and rumours of more sets potentially on their way in the coming months. It therefore makes plenty of sense that the character would eventually become a BrickHeadz model at some point, with 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog marking the 213th entry into the ever-expanding collectible theme.

The arrival of Sonic the Hedgehog as a BrickHeadz set is also accompanied by another entry in the series, 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower, possibly suggesting that we might see many more characters from the video game universe appearing in the future.

Translating Sonic the Hedgehog into BrickHeadz form could potentially have presented the set’s designers with something of a challenge. Traditionally portrayed with rounded lines, a small body, thin legs and protruding back spikes, the character may not have made the transition to a brick-based form that easily.

With that in mind, we’re pleased to report 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog perfectly encapsulates SEGA’s most famous creation, offering up a satisfying build that will be a welcome addition to any LEGO BrickHeadz fan's collection.

The build itself follows the tried-and-tested BrickHeadz formula, with construction starting on Sonic’s body, before moving on to the character’s head, feet and the standard black baseplate display stand. Highlights of 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog include a number of blue wedge pieces to simulate Sonic’s spikes, the usual mystery pink BrickHeadz block in the centre of his head, and printed green eyes. In addition, a handful of tan elements are dotted throughout the model to represent the character’s arms, cheeks and chest, which contrast really well with the primarily blue build.

Finishing touches come in the shape of a pair of brick-built red and white sneakers for feet, plus a yellow ring for the character to hold. The latter is the exact same accessory included with 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog – Green Hill Zone, although the item is much more in scale with the BrickHeadz set than the minifigure of Sonic included with the latter set.

40627 Sonic the Hedgehog represents the first iteration of the video game character as a BrickHeadz model, marking a welcome addition to the theme. The set accurately captures the look of the pop culture icon, offering up its own unique and blocky take on the super-fast mammal.

While the character may seem a little on the chunkier side as a BrickHeadz set, Sonic is still instantly recognisable and makes for a satisfying display piece, especially when placed next to his foxy friend, 40628 Miles “Tails” Prower.

In fact, the cost of purchasing 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog compares very favourably next to other licensed video game-based BrickHeadz builds such as 40624 Alex at 86 pieces, 40625 Llama with 100 pieces and 40626 Zombie coming in at 81 pieces.

There’s plenty to like about 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog, with the BrickHeadz set being a worthy addition to the ever-growing theme. The character translates extremely well into a larger, blockier form, yet still manages to capture the look and feel of SEGA’s speedy mascot.

While we’d have liked to have seen a gold drum-lacquered ring accessory or a printed name plaque included with 40627 Sonic the Hedgehog, those are just minor niggles and shouldn’t detract from the winning 213th BrickHeadz model.
