Packed with details and Easter eggs, 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City looks likely to be a true love letter to the ’90s TV show.
Last week saw the official reveal of 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, a 4,210-piece set that will be priced at £259.99 / $299.99 / €299.99. The LEGO Batman model launches exclusively for LEGO Insiders on April 1, with everyone else able to purchase the build from April 4.
76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City might not be enough to save the ailing LEGO DC theme and some initial impressions may have been less than positive. However, for some fans of the ’90s show created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski, the upcoming model looks likely to be something of a true love letter to its source material.
For starters, as well as being a striking piece of 3D brick-built wall art (okay, it can be displayed freestanding too), 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City also comes with four exclusive minifigures, contains at least 27 secret characters hidden behind pull-away panels, and boasts multiple nods to the show’s many iconic locations and classic episodes.
For instance, there’s Arkham Asylum on the left-hand side, with Poison Ivy’s plants growing out of the removable façade, or the Palace Theater, currently playing host to the Joker’s Laff Off competition and a poster of the Grey Ghost (as voiced in B:TAS by Adam West) on the exterior.
How about the Ace Chemical plant, home of the Joker’s creation, Paulie's pool hall complete with giant hidden Riddler question mark, notorious criminals-only hideout the Stacked Deck and Wild Deuces, Two-Face’s club turned base of operations?
That’s not forgetting Wayne Enterprises tower, the Galaxy Broadcasting building and stately Wayne Manor, complete with hidden Batcave below, Batcomputer, giant copper penny and tiny Batmobile.
It's clear that the more you study 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City, the more it begins to reveal its secrets, with what look to be many surprising layers waiting to be uncovered by fans of both LEGO Batman and the TV show that inspired the set.
