LEGO BrickLink Designer Program said to embrace major change

An experiment in Series 5 of the BrickLink Designer Program is said to be embraced permanently, reducing the risk of sets selling out in hours.

The fifth series of the BrickLink Designer Program differed from the rest in that it adopted a flexible stock model, in which the usual capacity of 30,000 copies per finalist would be increased based on demand, taking allocated stock from the less-popular builds to ensure that more fans had a chance to crowdfund these limited-edition sets.

This strategy worked well for Series 5, ensuring that the Castle creation didn't run out of stock within a matter of hours, as previous rounds have seen. Whether it will return in the future was not stated, and we even provided a guide to which builds in the upcoming Series 6 would be most at risk of selling out fast, should the change not continue.

Stonewars now reports that the BrickLink team announced at the Skærbæk Fan Weekend that this strategy will be used in Series 6 and all future rounds, removing the progress bars entirely. The final sales figures will reportedly still be announced at a later date.

It's nothing but good news for fans, as you're more likely to successfully crowdfund your favourite builds without risk of them selling out within the first day. They're still at risk of reaching a maximum number of copies ordered before the end of crowdfunding, but it should take days rather than hours.

It would still be a good idea to get on BrickLink as soon as possible when crowdfunding for Series 6 starts on October 6 at 8:00am PT, just in case. You should now have more peace of mind early next month and at the start of every crowdfunding phase in the future.
