LEGO cameos in Super Mario movie announcement, again

LEGO cameos in Super Mario movie announcement, again

A new Super Mario movie has been announced, and LEGO sets have not one but two cameos in the announcement, for the second time.

The Nintendo Direct from earlier today included the latest batch of news for the Super Mario movie sequel, now titled The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This follows the initial announcement for the film from 2024, where a familiar trio of sets made a brief appearance.

21323 Grand Piano, 71411 The Mighty Bowser and 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block were featured on the shelves of Chris Meledandri's office alongside other items from Illumination's history.

The new announcement video features just 21323 Grand Piano and 71395 Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block, removing 71411 The Mighty Bowser entirely. Bowser is still playing on the piano, but his giant LEGO figure has been replaced by an Amiibo. Nintendo and Illumination acknowledged an ideal set combination before, but now Bowser has been downsized significantly.

It's an interesting update to the shelves, but it seems unlikely that this is teasing anything since the LEGO Group released nothing to tie in with the first Super Mario movie. That's despite the incredible box office success of the film. Either way, it was a fun surprise for LEGO fans tuning in to the Nintendo Direct earlier today.

It will be worthwhile for LEGO fans to keep an eye on the upcoming The Super Mario Bros Galaxy Movie ahead of its release in April 2026, just in case the LEGO Group changes its mind on tie-in movie models. Currently, only a single 18+ set is rumoured for LEGO Super Mario next year in April.
