LEGO designers reveal the story behind CMF Series 28 Animals

The path taken to create 71051 Series 28 Animals has been revealed by the designers behind the upcoming LEGO CMF.

An all-new LEGO CMF will be dropping next month, with 71051 Series 28 Animals presenting a fun and colourful collection of 12 blind boxed characters to pick up. Each of the upcoming minifigures is based on a cute version of a real-life critter, complete with impressive head moulds, some printed arms and multiple accessories to accompany the line-up.

During a recent LEGO Fan Media Days event (which you can view right here), the designers responsible for 71051 Series 28 Animals revealed the story behind the creation of the creature-themed minifigures and Brick Fanatics was in attendance to hear what they had to say.

“This time around we just wanted to go full-on with animal costumes,” explained Esa Petteri Nousiainen. “We have 12 different minifigures in 12 different animal costumes. They are all brand-new costumes that we haven’t executed in minifigures ever. To make them extra special, we wanted to give them all fully new sculpted headgear.”

To help accentuate the whimsical nature of 71051 Series 28 Animals, the LEGO CMF’s designers ensured that each minifigure also comes with a baseplate that ties into the specific fauna-themed nature of the upcoming series.

“We just wanted to make the line-up as funny, colourful and joyful as possible and part of that is the green baseplates,” said Esa. “It is a costume party and we were thinking maybe the party is outdoors, fitting for the animals.”

Some previous LEGO CMFs have also included unique baseplates to place characters on, such as stone floors in 71047 Dungeons & Dragons, stars on the black display stands in 71046 Series 26 Space, and trans-orange versions in 71050 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,

71051 Series 28 Animals will be released on January 1, 2026, with each of the blind boxes retailing for £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99.
