LEGO Disney 43240 Maleficent set was almost a display model

LEGO Disney 43240 Maleficent’s Dragon Form was once envisioned to be a display-focused model until plans changed for another set.

The LEGO designer behind the first physical LEGO depiction of Maleficent in her dragon form has revealed that at one point during development, 43240 Maleficent’s Dragon Form was intended to be a display set, rather than one designed for play.

"The Maleficent dragon has always been a favourite character of mine both from the film and Fantasmic so I actually built a Maleficent dragon sketch model long before I was on the LEGO Disney team," writes Ryan Baird-Van Woerkom on his Brickset BrickList as spotted by PenPlays.

"It was originally intended as a display model for adults but had so much play appeal for kids that when another kids model was cancelled, this model took its place at the last minute. Many different element designers worked on the new dragon head element and I hope to see it reused for a classic LEGO dragon one day!"

"I enjoyed testing the set with lots of employee's kids and as a result added lots of different play starters to defeat, befriend, or tame the dragon like a sword, cupcake, and magic wand."

Those hoping for a display-focused LEGO Disney set won't find exactly what you're looking for in 43240 Maleficent’s Dragon Form, as much as that could have been the case until another set was cancelled.

Still, the model has plenty of appeal with the exclusive elements and the accurate Disney dragon and it can be yours starting June 1 for £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99 with 583 pieces and two mini-dolls. LEGO Disney has some display-centric models coming this summer including 43247 Young Simba the Lion King.
