LEGO football recolour is more affordable than expected

The LEGO football set has already been envisioned as a Death Star with recoloured pieces, but there's a more affordable way to realise this dream.

LEGO Editions 43019 Football is one of the most spectacular LEGO models ever designed, available now for £99.99 / $129.99 / €119.99 after launching just under two weeks ago.

It didn't take long after its release for the online LEGO community to remix 43019 Football as the Star Wars set we didn't know we needed – an enclosed Death Star with interior scenes. Doing so is quite the investment, as the necessary parts and sets cost around $220. Tips and Bricks demonstrated this earlier this year, and the result is appealing.

LEGO fans on a budget may struggle to afford the set as well as the recoloured parts, but you don't have to find grey versions of the pieces. One fan set out to simply recolour the parts in 43019 Football manually.

Free_Increase_6766 took to the LEGO Star Wars subreddit earlier this week to showcase their more involved recolour of 43019 Football, in which they take the exterior parts of the Editions set and change them with spray paint. It's a much different method from a traditional LEGO recolour, but also more affordable.

A can of paint for this method is unlikely to cost anywhere near as much as the approximately $90 required for the grey version of 43019 Football's parts. Some responses in the comments estimate a cost of between $5 to $10. While you'd be losing access to the prints on the pieces in 43019 Football, and would need to add the green superlaser yourself, this manual recolour of 43019 Football is effective.
