LEGO Game Boy is ‘a poem written with LEGO bricks’

One of the LEGO designers behind 72046 Game Boy has talked about his passion for the project and which of the set’s features is his favourite.

Nestled amongst the many LEGO releases that arrived on October 1, 2025 was 72046 Game Boy, a near 1:1 scale brick-built replica of the iconic Nintendo handheld console from the 1980s.

With the LEGO set now out in the wild, complete with impressive fan modifications, the design team behind the model has been discussing its creation, revealing just how much of a passion project 72046 Game Boy ultimately became.

“My older sister Julie got the first Nintendo Game Boy in our family and used to charge us a dollar an hour to play it,” revealed LEGO designer Carl Merriam to IGN. “Eventually I got my own and played it like crazy. My favourite Game Boy game is The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Designing the LEGO version of that Game Pak made my heart skip a beat.”

From interviews with the 72046 Game Boy design team, it’s clear that the set struck a chord with all involved, pushing them to make something truly special, although choosing one favourite feature from the build wasn’t easy.

“The LEGO System is a language. The LEGO Game Boy is a poem written with LEGO bricks,” explained Carl. “I used all my powers as both a veteran LEGO designer and a lifelong LEGO fan to make this set as excellent as possible, so there are lots of favourite things to choose from.

"If I have to pick just one, it’s the power switch. While working on this set, I focused on replicating all the haptics of the real Game Boy as closely as possible. I made all the buttons press-able and the dials turn-able, but getting that power switch to slide and click like the real one... that is my favourite feature.”

Priced at £54.99 / $59.99 / €59.99, 72046 Game Boy is currently on back order in the UK until October 8, in the US until October 18 and available to purchase right now in Europe.
