LEGO Goonies team talks minifigures, Easter eggs and spooky traps

The LEGO Ideas design team has been offering more insight into the creation of 21363 The Goonies, ahead of the movie set’s arrival next month.

LEGO Ideas is heading back to the 1980s once more next month, with the upcoming launch of 21363 The Goonies. The 2,912-piece set is based on the fan-favourite film and a winning design by Vaggelis Ntezes (also known as Delusion Brick), paying homage to the Steven Spielberg-produced classic.

Ahead of 21363 The Goonies releasing, the design team behind the LEGO Ideas build have been peeling back more of the set’s layers in a new post on LEGO.com, revealing plenty of additional details to be found in the movie model, such as its minifigure selection.

“The cast of The Goonies consists mostly of kids, all of them with very different and adorable characteristics,” said LEGO Ideas Senior Model Designer Marina Stampoli. "So, we couldn’t exclude any of them! It wouldn’t be an adventure without ‘bad guys’, so we also included the Fratellis, and our story wouldn’t have been complete without the legendary pirate and expert obstacle course designer, One-Eyed Willy.

“The minifigures have a variety of accessories, like Data’s spy contraptions, or Mouth’s hairbrush, because he has to look cool even when bad guys are chasing him inside a cave! We even designed new elements for Sloth’s pirate hat and bandana, and Mama Fratelli’s hair and beret.”

There are plenty of Easter eggs packed into 21363 The Goonies for fans to discover too, with a few more tucked inside the LEGO Ideas set’s accompanying GWP, 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic.

“There are so many that were included and even more that were not included,” revealed LEGO Ideas Senior Graphic Designer Anthony Palamaro. “Some we snuck in were the Fratellis’ printing press in the basement, the brown water Mama Fratelli offers the gang and the Wanted poster of the Fratellis.”

One area of 21363 The Goonies that required some specific creative problem-solving revolved around the use of the Copper Bones Skeleton Key to reveal a hidden trapdoor, a scene recreated in the set from the original film.

“I watched the movie multiple times, to make sure we would capture all the details!” said Marina. “If you hit the wrong note, we’ll all ‘B-flat’!” Press the keys on the skeleton organ to break the floor and access the slide to the Inferno’s hideaway, where the octopus (from a deleted scene) is hiding. Every little detail is designed to remind you of the movie and to help you have an adventure of your own.”

21363 The Goonies will launch early for LEGO Insiders on November 1, complete with exclusive 40773 The Goonies: The Walshes’ Attic GWP (while stocks last), followed by wider availability for all from November 4. The upcoming LEGO Ideas set will be priced at £269.99 in the UK, $329.99 in the US and €299.99 in Europe.
