There are few cars as instantly recognisable (or as downright cool) as the Shelby Cobra 427 S/C. Born from the wild ambition of Carroll Shelby in the 1960s, the original Cobra was the ultimate automotive crossover: a monstrous American V8 shoved into a lightweight British AC chassis. The result? One of the most thunderous, tyre-shredding icons of all time. The 427 S/C (Semi-Competition) in particular became the stuff of legend, blisteringly quick and brutally loud.

So, how well does the LEGO recreation stand up to the real thing? Well, first things first: it’s impossible to overstate how well the LEGO Group has captured the Cobra’s famously swooping yet muscular shape here. Those flared arches, the chunky bonnet bulge and the perfectly poised rear end all come together to form something that looks stunning from every angle.

It’s an impressive, and possibly much needed, step forward – especially when you think back to sets like 10262 Aston Martin DB5. As iconic as that build was, it was often criticised for struggling to nail the car’s elegant curves. What should have been smooth and cinematic ended up a little boxy and blocky in places. It’s a reminder of just how tricky it is to capture organic, flowing shapes with square bricks.

With the Shelby Cobra, however, it feels like the LEGO Group has finally cracked that problem. Unlike the DB5, the Cobra’s bodywork flows effortlessly from panel to panel. The low, aggressive stance, the beautifully rounded wheel arches and the subtle rear taper are recreated brilliantly. This is LEGO building at its very best. It's partly down to expert design, but also several new curved elements introduced in this set make a huge difference. It’s a set that frankly shouldn’t look this good in LEGO form – but thankfully it does.

The LEGO Group's design team have gone the extra mile on this one, introducing a handful of new elements specifically to get the Cobra’s distinctive shape and details just right. Those curved panels over the wheel arches? Brand new. The rounded nose? Helped by the introduction of a subtle new element that creates a much more natural front-end flow.

Even better, the set makes some really charming use of existing parts in playful and unexpected ways: ice skates for the boot hinges, gold sausages in the grille, teacups masquerading as side mirrors and the humble spoon and fork used ingeniously as foot pedals. It’s that clever part repurposing that seasoned LEGO fans will no doubt absolutely adore.

There’s also enough hidden Easter eggs to keep automotive aficionados happy too. The ‘427 S/C’ licence plate is a lovely touch that connects directly to the real car’s limited-run, while the green 100 note is a sly nod to Carroll Shelby’s legendary habit of placing a $100 bill on the dash and telling passengers they could keep it if they could grab it under full acceleration. Few ever could.

The Shelby Cobra isn’t just a static display piece, either. There's a working steering system and the bonnet, boot and doors all open smoothly, giving you proper access to the detailed engine bay, interior, and the removable tool kit and trophy in the back.

The real 427 S/C was terrifyingly powerful and notoriously difficult to handle at speed. It was a car that demanded respect, and while the LEGO version is mercifully safer to operate, it still captures that sense of brute force and awesome power. But be warned, this is no Sunday drive of a build. Compared to other LEGO Icons cars, 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C is noticeably more intricate, more technical, and much more of a challenge. This is a set that really demands your concentration.

You’ll be constantly working with clever construction techniques, from reversing studs to intricate offsetting to achieve those beautifully flared rear wheel arches. There are sections where you find yourself locking in bricks at surprising angles to build the complex body curves – and getting that right can take a bit of patience and a steady hand.

It’s the kind of build where you occasionally have to stop, tilt your head, and double-check whether you’ve got that stud in exactly the right spot. (Spoiler: you probably haven’t on the first go.)

This is definitely not a model for novice builders or anyone just dipping their toes into the LEGO hobby for the first time. The complexity is part of the fun, but it’s worth knowing that this isn’t one of those sets you can breeze through while half-watching TV. It’s the kind of build that keeps you fully locked in: methodical, rewarding, and at times just the right side of fiddly.

But if you’re up for the challenge, it’s a drive well worth taking. It's a set that asks a little more from you, but rewards you with something properly special.

LEGO Icons 10357 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C is one of those sets that does exactly what you’d hope, and then quietly surprises by exceeding all your expectations. It’s not just another big blue car with white stripes. It’s a faithful, beautifully thought out recreation of one of the most celebrated muscle cars ever made, and it carries the spirit of Carroll Shelby’s no-nonsense, horsepower-obsessed vision throughout the entire build.

Yes, there’s some visual overlap with the existing 10265 Ford Mustang, most notably in the colour scheme, but the Cobra’s design language is distinct enough to stand on its own. If anything, they’d look superb side-by-side on the shelf - a love letter to two different but equally iconic eras of American muscle.

From the first brick to the final sticker, this is a build that’s pure joy for car lovers, LEGO fans, and anyone who just appreciates great design. The shaping is excellent and the functionality is just right. What was already a seriously cool car is now a seriously cool LEGO set too.
