Full of shiny objects to catch the eye, 21362 Mineral Collection takes LEGO Ideas in yet another different direction.
LEGO Ideas is unrivalled in its variety – one minute you could be building a detailed, huge recreation of scenic Italian coastline, the next you could be reliving the 1980s in brick form with an iconic character of a certain Gremlin, and the next, you could be studying a selection of eye-catching and shiny objects.

And that’s what LEGO Ideas 21362 Mineral Collection is – a twist in creative direction from the theme, this time offering up a collection of six buildable minerals complete with three separate display stands that can also be placed together.
This Ideas set is based on a fan submission from Dario Del Frate (ddf72 on LEGO Ideas) and is a relatively simple premise – turning some of the most interesting and unique natural minerals there are into LEGO bricks, in the form of a quite unique, display-orientated set.

The six minerals that make up 21362 are watermelon tourmaline, pyrite, amethyst, rhodochrosite, tangerine quartz and fluorite, and between them is almost every colour under the rainbow, all sorts of curious formations and shapes, and, from a LEGO perspective, every opportunity for something rather interesting to build.
Pleasingly, 21362 Mineral Collection very much is that – interesting to build, and far more so than you may think by just taking in the images. Beyond the unusual final structures that each mineral offers up for LEGO building, there are a number of clever and twisting techniques worked into each model to capture the unique characteristics of each mineral and, in particular, their vibrant colours.
Admittedly, watermelon tourmaline is having a hard time adapting to LEGO form and to be honest those 1x2 trans-clear grille pieces lining the outside have a lot to do with it. Without those, perhaps the internal red, yellow and green colours would better bleed through.
The other five minerals, though, turn out fantastic in LEGO form thanks to some clever recolours of relatively new pieces you may recognise from other themes and, as mentioned, some neat building techniques to allow for models that look good across 360 degrees, from any angle. The way in which their respective colours come through in either clear, vibrant singular tones or across a variety of shades is what really makes each model shine.
Meanwhile, the three display stands to sit them on are nicely put together, offering the choice too of coming together for a singular, longer stand for all six to sit on.
There’s little to criticise in 21362 Mineral Collection, as much as anything because it’s what LEGO Ideas continues to lean into and that we are very much here for – visiting new and completely different concepts and ideas in LEGO form and making them the very best exploration of both subject matter and LEGO technique that you could hope for.
Granted, a display model centred around a mineral collection may not be to everyone’s immediate tastes, whilst the price does rather ringfence this to more particular fans first (£10 cheaper would feel fair here), but LEGO Ideas rarely disappoints and if you find yourself picking this up there’s more than enough to reward you in both build and final model. Thanos would approve.
Our honest opinion: LEGO Ideas shines best when trying out new things, and 21362 Mineral Collection offers something entirely new and different to build, with interesting techniques and at least five credible final models to appreciate. The price is a little high, though.
