LEGO Ideas 40789 Flying Moon Car review

LEGO Ideas 40789 Flying Moon Car is a detailed, fun and excellently-designed set available now in the LEGO Insiders Reward Centre.

Available to LEGO Insiders in the Insiders Reward Centre for 2,500 Insiders Points since July 1 (and still in stock at the time of writing) is LEGO Ideas 40789 Flying Moon Car.

40789 is the official LEGO set version of EnchantingNoodle’s winning fan submission to the LEGO Ideas Explore the Cosmos challenge held in early 2024, which asked fan builders to dream up concepts of life on other planets more than 100 years into our future.

Pleasingly, very little has changed between EnchantingNoodle’s submission and the final version, with the shaping and structure of the hover vehicle very much the same, reflecting that retro-futuristic design of a large front grille, smoothed-out bodywork, two-person cockpit (and two minifigures included), fins along the side, and dual rocket boosters at the back.

The surface of the moon that they are racing along is excellently built into the little display stand too, which angles the vehicle in a dynamic pose just as it is racing past a lamppost complete with directional arrow.

At 2,500 Insiders Points 40789 Flying Moon Car is not the cheapest. That’s an amount of points that will have required a spend of over £310 to earn at LEGO.com, or in the LEGO Store, whilst it’s a number of points otherwise eligible to get just over £15 off a future LEGO.com or LEGO Store purchase.

But 40789 Flying Moon Car is the sort of high quality, fun and thematically spot-on build that more than delivers in value, play and display. It may cost a little bit – most LEGO Insiders Rewards tend to – but this one delivers in every way. One not to miss.
