LEGO Ideas Mineral Collection required all-new elements

Multiple all-new elements had to be created in order to complete the construction of the upcoming LEGO Ideas 21362 Mineral Collection.

The LEGO Ideas team recently unearthed the theme’s 70th fan-designed set, in the impressive shape of 21362 Mineral Collection. The 880-piece build is based on a winning 10K submission by Dario del Frate and recreates a selection of six eye-catching rocks such as golden pyrite, purple amethyst, tangerine quartz and more.

In a recent roundtable interview with Brick Fanatics and other LEGO fan media, the LEGO Ideas team revealed how the unique look of 21362 Mineral Collection came to be and why a number of new pieces were required in order to achieve the fan designer’s vision for the set.

“We actually have three new parts. One was in the 'Jack Sparrow’s starship', as I'm calling it," explained Design Manager Jordan Scott, referring to a trans-light blue wedge piece found in 10365 Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Ship and utilised in the fluorite build. "Then we made a recolour, which is technically classed as a new element, because you needed a new mould, as transparent plastic and opaque plastic are two separate things.

“So you have the top of the quartz, which is the one-by-two pyramid, or half pyramid. That's technically a new element. But then when we were building the tourmaline, we found it very difficult to build all the way around on all sides with the colour. So we actually made a new piece which has been quite popular in our portfolio, which is a kind of a half brick head element inside the tourmaline.”

"So we did that in two different colours," said Jordan, "and if you put them back-to-back, you basically get like a super brick head brick, so you can build in multiple directions. And that was really key to making the tourmaline, otherwise it was just super unstable. But then, we've got a lot of recolours. The grille tile, that's a new one. The two-by-two jumper was already existing, but it was still new to us. The one-by-one, cheese slope in transparent purple is coming back, making a reappearance too."
