The LEGO Ideas team has pulled the Donkey Kong 10K project from the second 2024 review, ending its chances of becoming an official LEGO set.
By If You Build It’s Donkey Kong project reimagined the original 1981 arcade game in bricks, complete with a Pauline minifigure, and spent two years gathering enough votes to reach the LEGO Ideas review stage. It passed the 10,000-vote mark two weeks ago – but will now no longer be part of the second 2024 review, as the LEGO Ideas team has quietly archived the project.
As is usually the case when this happens, the LEGO Group has not shared any specific reasons for the archival, which means we can only speculate as to the cause. But with this project, it might be a little more obvious: By If You Build It originally submitted their project back in July 2022, and in the time it’s spent climbing to 10K the LEGO Group has not only released its own Donkey Kong sets but has also launched a retro arcade game in 10323 PAC-MAN Arcade.
Any of those products could be enough to warrant archiving the LEGO Ideas project given the platform specifically bans submissions that conflict with existing LEGO sets. Either way, it’s pure bad luck for the fan designer – especially as they couldn’t have known what the LEGO Group had up its sleeve for 2023 when they were piecing together their project.
A tiny consolation might be that the team has at least caught this one relatively early – or at least earlier than the Twin Towers project that was recently archived from the third 2023 review.
The second LEGO Ideas 2024 review now includes 35 projects at the time of writing, with Bob’s Old Tugboat the latest to sail past the 10K mark. The qualifying window for this round closes in just a few days, so we should have a final shortlist of contenders very soon. Check out the full list as things stand in the table below.
