LEGO Minifigures Series 29 spotlight: Robot T. rex

Roaring on to the scene in LEGO Minifigures 71052 Series 29 comes the Robot T. rex, which feels like the brainchild of a six-year-old kid.

And isn’t that what the LEGO Minifigures theme should really be all about? It’s certainly what the original, in-house series do best, taking the opportunity to dream up the sort of zany creative concepts that work so well in this theme but wouldn’t really find a home anywhere else. The Robot T. rex ticks that box very nicely for Series 29.

Amid an otherwise very impressive cast of characters, though, it’s fair to say this one risks being overlooked. It’s not hooked to an iconic LEGO franchise, it won’t necessarily slot easily into your LEGO city, and it doesn’t feature any brand new moulds. But don’t let it slip by in May: there’s a lot to love here.

Take, for instance, the incredible level of all-over printing, which even extends to the tail and the sides of the torso and legs. Beyond the head and tail, only the claws on the feet give any hint that this is a dino, so you could easily repurpose the torso and legs for a generic sci-fi suit.

The aperture on the head, meanwhile, feels like the kind of thing that could have multiple applications, whether in other minifigures or as a detail in a futuristic build. The same goes for the battery accessory, which is comprised of a 1x1 round plate and a unique printed 1x1 round brick.

Yet even considering the Robot T. rex as it comes in the box, this is still a very cool minifigure and an interesting development of the T. rex minifigure costume introduced in Series 24. If you want to get your hands on it, your best bet is downloading the Brick Search app ahead of Series 29’s launch in May.

Brick Search Plus members get unlimited use of the minifigure scanner, which reveals what’s inside each mystery box. Download Brick Search on iOS or Android now and benefit from everything else the app has to offer too, including collection and wishlist management, a price comparison tool and a regularly-updated list of retiring sets.
