The inclusion of the Mysterious Ronin in 71052 Series 29 isn’t the first time we’ve seen other LEGO themes represented as Collectible Minifigures.
With LEGO NINJAGO celebrating its 15th anniversary this year and 71052 Series 29 launching next month, a collaboration between the two would seem to have been an obvious choice. However, the upcoming Collectible Minifigures’ Mysterious Ronin isn’t the first character from an established LEGO theme to appear in such a line-up, nor is he alone in 71052 Series 29.
While not explicitly stated, the LEGO Collectible Minifigures design team has already confirmed that Mysterious Ronin is essentially Lloyd in all but name, albeit one from an alternate timeline. 71052 Series 29 also features a Bionicle Cosplayer, a nod to the fan-favourite theme that debuted all the way back in 2001 and is likely to prove a popular choice come launch day.
The long-running tradition of adding familiar characters to Collectible Minifigures can be traced all the way back to the very first series that debuted in 2010 and has continued to be a trend in almost every consecutive release to date.
8683 Series 1 kicked things off with a Forestman minifigure from LEGO Classic Castle sets and last year’s 71048 Series 27’s included the Wolfpack Beastmaster, with everything from Blacktron, Galaxy Patrol, Pirates, Rock Raiders, Western and Space being covered in-between.
“Whatever we do, we usually try to collaborate internally and involve the right stakeholders,” explained LEGO Collectible Minifigures Design Lead Esa Nousiainen to Brick Fanatics at last year’s Fan Media Days event, “so we were talking to the NINJAGO team about [Mysterious Ronin].
“We said that we could do something for the 15th anniversary. It’s for the fans who know who he is, they know, as the green eyes will be visible. The rest is left to the NINJAGO team, such as if they want to use that in the stories, or not.”
You’ll be able to pick up Mysterious Ronin and Bionicle Cosplayer when 71052 Series 29 is released on May 1, with each blind-box priced at £3.49 / $4.99 / €3.99.
