Think the LEGO Otters doesn't include a fan designer reference? Think again

LEGO Ideas sets typically include an Easter egg from the fan designer, but 21366 Floating Sea Otters doesn't appear to have one – at least at first.

LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters was originally designed by Maximilian Lambrecht, before being handed over to the LEGO Group's Chris McVeigh to finalise the design ahead of going on shelves. As well as making some style and size changes, this process is also usually the moment where a fun Easter egg linked to the fan designer's life or personality is included in the set.

It's a long-running tradition in LEGO Ideas, but the display-ready nature of 21366 Floating Sea Otters might make you think there are no inside references in this set. However, this inside reference is just hidden a little further inside than most.

"Max asked for a 1x1 compass tile, which we built right into the centre of the otter pup," explained Chris. "There's this little pedestal and a compass that goes on top of it. It's hidden in there, but I imagine we're going to get a lot of questions about why there's a compass inside the otter pup."

But why a compass? Other fan designers have requested special dates like birthdays or anniversaries, or woven their initials into license plates and other strings of letters, but the compass has just as much meaning to Max as those have to the other designers.

"For me personally, I'm a nature person," explained Max. "The compass captured my personality, but it was also a reference to my username: His Brick Materials. That's based on one of my favourite books, Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials, which features The Golden Compass. The compass is a little reference to that."

To see the hidden compass for yourself (as well as build the adorable set, of course), you can pre-order LEGO Ideas 21366 Floating Sea Otters for £99.99 / $119.99 / €109.99 right now, ahead of its general release on March 1.
