LEGO Party! preview reveals impressive take on existing game genre

A new look at LEGO Party! has revealed more positive impressions of developer SMG Studio and publisher Fictions' upcoming video game.

The LEGO Group will be taking on the long-running Mario Party series later this year with its own four-player family minigame offering. LEGO Party! has been created in conjunction with developer SMG Studio and publisher Fictions, and is due to land on Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and PC sometime in the months to come.

First revealed at the recent Summer Game Fest 2025 show, LEGO Party! looks to pack hours of multiplayer action and fun into the title, with a new hands-on preview of the experience noting that it appears to be full of fresh ideas and impressive gameplay.

Nintendojo has taken a closer look at LEGO Party!, following initial positive reactions by a number of other media sources. The good news is that it sounds like gamers will have plenty to look forward to when the title finally drops later this year.

“Yes, it’s rather formulaic in its execution,” said Nintendojo, “but it does what it does very well. In the match I got to play, I found myself smiling and laughing as we made our way around the board. And hey, if you’re not happy about smiling and laughing while you’re playing a party game, well, what else is a party game for?"

The latest preview goes on to discuss the set-up of LEGO Party!, what players can expect when they get their hands on the title and new innovations the game brings to the minigame genre.

“An interesting innovation here is the ability to land on spaces where the player chooses what new feature is built,” explains Nintendojo, “which will have a profound impact on the rest of a given match. That might all sound a tad rote in some respects, but LEGO Party! does enough to make itself stand out from the crowd, especially on the polish side of things. Besides more than looking the part, it also plays the part very, very well.”

Other smart changes are also said to have been added to LEGO Party!, with new game features that should hopefully make the title stand out from a crowd of similar interactive offerings.

“Normally in Mario Party,” Nintendojo states, “shops serve no purpose on the last turn, as there’s no point in buying items at that point. Thus, those spaces are essentially just a waste of space and majorly disappointing to land on at the end, especially when there might be a lot riding on a good roll of the dice."

"Thankfully, in LEGO Party! it switches things up by transforming shop spaces into event spaces. It’s little touches like that which show how much thought is going into the game.”

LEGO Party! will be launching on Nintendo Switch, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and PC later this year, alongside another new video game offering, LEGO Voyagers.
