The LEGO Group has dropped a new trailer that shows what the LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets can do – both good and bad.
The response to the LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets has been largely mixed. While the concept of the technology holds promise for many, some of the sounds that are triggered in the sets are far from convincing.
Both the pros and cons are driven home in the LEGO Group's latest trailer, showing off the new wave of Star Wars LEGO sets. The play features are well evidenced, including the undoubtedly impressive way that tilting the brick-built ships in different ways triggers different sounds. SMART Play works in a much more sophisticated way than just a sound brick, and that's highlighted in this trailer.
However, when you hear the minifigure Leia 'talk' to Luke, triggered by the SMART Brick, the limitations of the technology are also made clear. The gravelly noises kind of work for R2-D2, but there's no world in which the sound Leia makes is anything like the original character, or even a logical noise for her to make. You can see what we're talking about by watching the trailer from this start point, or you can watch it in full via the embedded video below.
While the SMART Play features hold promise, there are some clear areas of improvement in its execution – at least at this early stage. All eight initial LEGO Star Wars SMART Play sets are available to buy now from LEGO.com, if you want to try it out for yourself.
