When it comes to LEGO Star Wars sets, 75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter is hard to beat, but how does it stack up to its most similar, recent counterpart?
A fresh wave of LEGO Star Wars sets will be dropping out of hyperspace in April 2026, with 75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter being a particular stand-out launch. While the upcoming model delivers a much-appreciated fresh update of a familiar vessel from a brick-built galaxy far, far away, how does the set compare to a similar, recent release?
We’re referring, of course, to 75301 Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Fighter, a 474-piece offering that arrived in 2021 priced at £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99. The two LEGO Star Wars models are exactly the same size, measuring over 8cm high, 31cm long and 28cm wide, although 75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter bests the previous release with its 558-piece count, albeit with a slight cost increase.
However, although 75301 Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Fighter uses fewer elements than the new LEGO Star Wars set, it did come with three desirable minifigures and an R2-D2 droid figure, compared to just two minifigures and a New Republic astromech droid figure in 75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter, so that’s certainly a win for the older set.
The two LEGO Star Wars models may look very similar, that's for sure, and spotting differences between the pair of builds can be a little tricky. In some cases, it’s just particular parts that have been swapped out, while in others it’s practically the same building techniques that have been utilised. The good news is, those same techniques work very well, so it’s good to see them return once again.
75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter introduces some interesting new approaches to constructing such a build too, such as how the nose of the starship is assembled, that advances the design of these craft. The LEGO Star Wars set is essentially a refinement of 75301 Luke Skywalker’s X-Wing Fighter, keeping what worked so well previously and throwing in some much-appreciated new ideas.

That’s not to say that 75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter is the best-ever recreation of the ship to date (although it should be noted that this mid-range play-scale works really well for these X-wings). Nope, that award must go to 75218 X-Wing Starfighter, with the long-since retired 730-piece set having launched back in 2018, yet still remaining an entertaining build with its own must-have minifigure and droid selection.
As far as we’re concerned, that LEGO Star Wars model remains the gold standard for X-Wings at this particular scale. 75218 X-Wing Starfighter has yet to be beaten in terms of accuracy, design, attention to detail and piece count, although 75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter certainly gives the ship a good run for its money.
75460 New Republic X-Wing Starfighter will be released on April 1, priced at £59.99 / $69.99 / €69.99 and you can find out everything you need to know about the LEGO Star Wars set in our full review here.
