There’s something missing from the LEGO Disney Moana 2 sets 

A pair of LEGO sets inspired by Moana 2 have been revealed, but there’s a huge difference between them and those of the first movie. 

A Moana 2 merchandise reveal from earlier today has provided us with a first look at 43260 Moana’s Island Fun and 43270 Moana’s Adventure Canoe. These include several characters from the sequel, but a couple of familiar faces are missing – one of which has been missing for seven years. While the two sets feature the likes of Moana and Pua as well as the film’s new characters, both Hei Hei and Maui are not featured in the sets. 

As one of two animal companions in the movie, the lack of Hei Hei isn’t quite as notable as that of Maui, who played a huge part in the first film. 

Maui is confirmed to return in the sequel and is present in other merchandise for the movie too, but notably not much else from the reveal earlier today. The first sets for the initial Moana movie included a figure of Maui in 41150 Moana's Ocean Voyage, but since then the character has been missing from LEGO Disney. 

The 2017 set represented Maui as a bigfig and this might be why he has yet to return to LEGO Disney, even for the animated sequel. Bringing Maui back might require the return of his original mould, though it’s not the only option for a new Maui. 

As well as recreating the character with pieces, which may not look as organic as required, the new system of LEGO bigfigs is ideal for Maui. It includes a generic base body that can be printed with relevant details, an upscaled head and a hairpiece that can be removed. 

Hulk from the 76290 The Avengers vs. The Leviathan and 76269 Avengers Tower is a good showcase of the system in use and while Maui would have been a good fit for it with a new hairpiece, he is missing from the Moana 2 sets. 

Currently, no other Moana 2 sets are rumoured for 2025, but the theme has plenty reportedly on the table otherwise. While we wait, pre-orders for 43270 Moana’s Adventure Canoe open on December 1 and the two sets should launch on January 1, 2025.
