New LEGO Jurassic World dinosaur figure is dexterous

One of the new LEGO Jurassic World figures spotted in a recent Instagram reveal is more dexterous than the rest, or any other LEGO dinosaur.

This weekend's many LEGO Jurassic World reveals included builds and figures likely scheduled for future sets. These featured a brick-built Spinosaurus to signs of our first The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and new Jurassic Park III sets. There are also minifigures of Sarah Harding, Ian Malcolm and a dinosaur figure of Junior for the second Jurassic Park film.

It's the Junior figure that has caught our eye, though. The young T. Rex figure stands out from any other LEGO dinosaur for one important reason. One of the claw hands is pointing upwards, rather than to the side.

Most LEGO animal figures have had the hands pointing to the side, meaning any accessories they hold wouldn't look as if a human were holding them. The classic Monkey piece is the exception to this rule, but there hasn't been another LEGO dinosaur quite like this.

It's an odd time to break this rule, and it's hard to think what a dinosaur figure would need to hold. The possibilities are endless, from lightsabers to flags. That's not the case within the context of Jurassic Park, though. Dinosaurs in that property have never held anything in their claws. It leaves us to speculate on why the LEGO Group has designed such a dinosaur figure now. It brings to mind one property with a new entry coming this year.

The overall shape of the figure and the ability to hold objects remind us of Rex from Toy Story, for which this figure would be appropriately sized compared to a minifigure. The head is the only substantially different part of Rex, since the eyes would need to be on the front of the head, rather than the sides.

The LEGO Group's previous Rex figure was last seen in 2019 for Toy Story 4. We don't yet know when this new young T. Rex figure will be released, but it will be interesting to see how else this dinosaur appears in the portfolio and whether it's holding anything in the future.

None of the LEGO Jurassic World sets teased or revealed over the past few days has release dates at the time of writing, but you can take a closer look at the upcoming fossil model by clicking here in the meantime.
