LEGO Minifigures 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver Minifigure review

LEGO Minifigures 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver Minifigure is an odd choice for the latest addition to this series, but still hard not to love.

On from 76393 Harry Potter & Hermione Granger, LEGO House exclusive 40504 A Minifigure Tribute and 2023’s 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure, the next in line to add to the series is 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver Minifigure. As far as subject matter goes, it isn’t the most inspired, iconic or necessarily interesting selection from the LEGO Group to join this unique collection.

So, will the novelty of the up-scaled series keep things interesting now we are five minifigures deep into the collection, or is 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver Minifigure up against it to impress in 2025?

Uninspired subject matter or not, the novelty around these up-scaled minifigures is still pretty high, and the LEGO Group is playing it very smart not to change what is a winning formula with 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver Minifigure too. It means that what worked so well before continues to do so here, and this little guy becomes just the latest example of blending the best of LEGO building (creating new and interesting things) with the classic, iconic nature of the minifigure design.

Even though an Octan-branded racing driver doesn’t make for the most interesting subject matter to get the same treatment as the likes of Captain Redbeard or the generic, smiling minifigure, what works so well about those sets still translates over to 40819 just as strongly.

Which is to say, 40819 Up-Scaled Racing Driver Minifigure is just as fun and interesting to put together, following a now established template in building out from a complex, sturdy torso design to cleverly attaching the hips in an unexpected way, to just-as-creatively putting together two legs and then two arms before finishing with the headpiece with helmet build. Even with two arms and two legs to put together – and all in green for these parts too – at no stage does the build process drag on or cause you to lose interest.

Indeed, if anything these up-scaled minifigures offer a mix of pace and intrigue in how they are built to keep you fully invested all the way to the end. The techniques that were so clever in previous editions are still prevalent here and can give anyone who has built the set an inside appreciation for just how smart some of the secret tricks and ideas are that manage to hold together something that at face value looks otherwise quite simple.

Still, as a choice of subject, the racing driver isn’t the most inspired, but it does offer a different colour scheme to 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure and will probably become more desirable the deeper into this collection we go (assuming the LEGO Group has more of these planned).

And dull subject matter or not, the charm of scaling up any LEGO character is still very much in play here and does pull you into the fun side of the set very easily and, once complete, you’ll be as hands-on with this as you would have been if it were, say, a Classic Space astronaut, or Darth Vader.

There’s so much that works so well about the up-scaled minifigure series that means even something you can objectively say you aren’t as interested in is still so enjoyable and engaging to put together, and very tempting to continually play with once built.
