Disney has kept the plot of The Mandalorian & Grogu under wraps so far, and the associated LEGO sets are following suit.
The trailer and any clues dropped by those involved in The Mandalorian & Grogu so far have kept all cards close to the chest. While there are some clues as to new characters – the first look at Sigourney Weaver's character, a glimpse of Rotta the Hutt, as just a few examples – the majority is atmospheric or action shots that don't give away much about the actual plot.
That tactic of secrecy carries through into the LEGO Star Wars sets revealed earlier today. We still don't really know who the main antagonist of the movie will be, with unconfirmed reports suggesting it could be the Kyuzo bounty hunter Embo.
However, this character does not appear in any of the sets, even 40856 The Mandalorian and Grogu: Allies & Villains, which has villains in the title. Could this be dropping a clue that Sigourney Weaver's character, Colonel Ward, might be a surprise villain?
All that's been confirmed about the character so far is her name and rank, thanks to a report from Empire where it's stated that Din Djarin will be receiving orders from her. In the BrickHeadz set, Ward is pictured standing face-to-face with Din Djarin on the box, perhaps in a standoff, while lifestyle images show her grouped with the clear enemy of an Imperial Remnant Snowtrooper.
In the rest of the sets, the only enemy characters are anonymous soldiers, with generic Imperial soldiers appearing as minifigures in 75444 AT-RT Attack and 75447 The Razor Crest. That leaves very few antagonists on the table, aligning with Disney's secretive approach to marketing the movie so far.
Could the lack of villains mean there's a big surprise on the way, perhaps either a betrayal or some kind of enmity with Colonel Ward – or a returning character set to make a shock appearance? We can only speculate, but the empty space for villains in these sets is saying more than what is included.
Other inclusions in the set only serve to confirm already hinted-at details. Zeb's updated minifigure in 75447 The Razor Crest and indeed the return of the ship have already been highlighted in the trailer. Showrunner Jon Favreau already promised that the movie will have "a lot of fun" with the Rebels fan favourite.
“Now we get to really have fun with him,” said Favreau in an interview with Empire. “He’s such a compelling character, even if you’ve never seen Rebels, between the voice, the swagger, and the physical ability.”
His presence as a minifigure speaks to this expanded role, hopefully getting more of a look-in than his brief bar appearance in The Mandalorian season 3.
Anzellans also feature in both the trailer and two of the revealed sets, underlining their prominence in the cinematic story. 75445 Anzellan Starship quite literally has their presence in the name.
At this early stage, it seems that the LEGO Star Wars team have either been given limited information (as we know has happened in the past) or are saving some of the more spoiler-territory sets for when the movie is already out. We've seen that tactic pan out before with both LEGO Star Wars and Marvel – but for now, the big takeaway seems to be to look at what's not included in these sets, rather than what is.
