Every LEGO set has a finite lifespan, but just because a model has been retired doesn’t always mean that it’s gone for good.
While many LEGO fans eagerly look forward to picking up new sets on the day they’re released, there are others who are a little more selective when it comes to making their next purchases. While waiting weeks, months or even longer to pull the trigger on must-have models might be a good strategy to potentially save some cash, there’s also the risk of knowing those same builds will retire one day.
That’s the frustrating inevitability that all LEGO sets face at some point, with models having a finite lifespan due to production, storage and other costs. Once a build has been retired, it simply makes way for new LEGO products, which will eventually suffer the same fate further down the line.

Fortunately, visitors to LEGO.com can look for sets that will be leaving the site in the future by selecting the ‘Retiring soon’ option from the online store’s search parameters. A number of those models may be available to order right now, have a specific shipping date, be on back order, are temporarily out of stock or simply sold out.
Retiring LEGO sets showing as being temporarily out of stock can often return after a short hiatus (perhaps with a discount), meaning customers will have the opportunity to snap them up them once again. Likewise, sets that are listed as being sold out well before their scheduled retirement date can randomly pop up on LEGO.com from time-to-time (although that’s very rare), may be in stock in LEGO stores or are still available from some third party retailers.
With that being said, keeping your fingers crossed to pick up sold out retiring LEGO models further down the line is a dangerous game to play. There are no guarantees that those sets will be back in stock at a later date at all, which could mean trying to purchase the builds from other more expensive sources, such as the secondary market.
It’s worth noting that the LEGO Group often moves retirement dates for its sets, pushing when they’ll be gone for good further down the line.
