The new LEGO Star Wars Death Star set will come with an exclusive TIE Fighter gift-with-purchase at launch, and it's already receiving upgrades.
75419 Death Star's 40771 TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack is the latest set-specific gift-with-purchase, and the first to accompany a set with a $1,000 price tag. The 236-piece build is designed to expand the hangar bay in the £899.99 / $999.99 / €999.99 LEGO Star Wars set, adding a TIE Fighter alongside the white shuttle.
As mentioned in our review of 40771 TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack, the microscale TIE Fighter has a basic build, lacking the refined shaping and design cues you’d expect from even a mid-tier Star Wars set. It can seat a single minifigure inside, impacting the shape of the circular cockpit.
It hasn't taken the community long to add a few upgrades to this set ahead of its launch, reinventing aspects of the model to add detail, without expanding the footprint of the build so that it can still fit inside 75419 Death Star. Jamo88's efforts to amend 40771 TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack include extending the grey framing on each wing, as well as modifying the shape of the cockpit to be more rounded but still fit a minifigure inside.
Others in the community decided that 40771 TIE Fighter with Imperial Hangar Rack needs grey framing around the edge of each wing, which is entirely possible at the scale presented in the gift-with-purchase. Both Jannin Bricks and mint9000 have upgraded the LEGO Star Wars set in this way, using clip and bar-compatible plates to line the edge of the hexagonal wings, similarly to
They've both adapted the shape of the cockpit to be more rounded, but note that a minifigure can not fit inside mint9000's design. The instructions for both of these are free, as well, and don't require many additional pieces. This should be useful after you've spent £899.99 / $999.99 / €999.99 on 75419 Death Star and the exclusive gift-with-purchase.
