Seven of LEGO's best and most unique box designs

While the contents of LEGO sets are what you're paying for, the LEGO Group has designed some genuinely unique boxes to hold the bricks.

Every LEGO model needs a box (or bag) to hold the bricks that make it up, but sometimes the LEGO design teams see these boxes as an opportunity to further stretch their creative muscles. Inspired by the reveal of some especially artistic LEGO boxes earlier today, we're diving into LEGO history to find some of these interesting packaging examples.

From nostalgic callbacks to showing only two minifigures on the front of the packaging, here are seven of the LEGO Group's most unique box designs, and some of their best visually.

21589 Mini Biomes' in-game lifestyle shots

LEGO Minecraft 21589 Mini Biomes appears to have a standard box design upon first glance, but a closer look reveals that the Micro World model's packaging has a unique take on a lifestyle image on the front and back. Instead of depicting the set on a real table or surface, it is displayed as if it were decor in a Minecraft home, complete with the square scenery outside the window.

LEGO Star Wars' SMART Play sets

LEGO Star Wars' first three SMART Play models may have drawn some mixed reactions online, but there's no denying the interesting nature of their box art. The LEGO Group's focus with these boxes is on advertising the SMART Play features, using graphics to showcase the SMART elements in the builds and their functions. The whole box even looks like it's a giant SMART Brick, with the four studs on the right side.

10391 Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams

The recently-retired 10391 Over the Moon with Pharrell Williams leaned on the artistic side of the Piece by Piece movie for its box art, displaying just a portion of the set on the front and a stylised backdrop, as well as Williams's face displayed on the side. It remains one of the most unique LEGO boxes, holding one of the most unique sets to boot.

76157 Wonder Woman vs Cheetah

Arguably, the most unusual LEGO box art has to be that of 76157 Wonder Woman vs Cheetah. This model is based on the Wonder Woman 1984 movie, but you wouldn't even be able to tell what it includes by looking just at the front of the box. The part of the box that would be displayed on shelves shows only the Wonder Woman and Cheetah minifigures facing off in colourful artwork. Turn that box around, and you'll see that the set also includes a full transmitter tower and an additional minifigure.

LEGO Education's 2026 sets

On the subject of colourful box art with an artistic flair, LEGO Education's four new 2026 sets have some of the visually appealing boxes ever designed. They similarly don't show off a lot of actual content of each set, but get across the subject of the lessons to be learnt. The mix of warm and cool colours also helps these boxes stand out, even in this list.

1788 Pirate Treasure Chest

1788 Pirate Treasure Chest from 1995 is one of the oldest examples of a unique LEGO box design, eschewing the standard shape for a functional chest which is decorated accordingly. It's a fitting box for a LEGO Pirates set, and one that would be interesting to see in the modern day.

21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay's callback

The more recent LEGO Ideas 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay calls back to the original era of LEGO Pirates by paying tribute to its box art, but with enhancements and updates which you would expect of a current-day release. The simple addition of the yellow border and banner goes a long way in increasing this already nostalgic model's appeal, and it's not hard to see why it remains one of the most popular and iconic retired LEGO Ideas models.
