The delay of Dune's sequel from November into 2024 may be to The Marvels' benefit, freeing up screens for the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
The second part of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series has been delayed from November 3, 2023, to March 15, 2024, as a result of the ongoing Screen Actors Guild and Writers Guild strikes. According to IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond, the Dune sequel in an earnings call reported by Variety, the IMAX slot taken up by Dune's sequel was preventing The Marvels or any other movie from being shown on IMAX screens.
"Dune, specifically, I mean, there’s another great movie coming out around that time, which is The Marvels from Marvel, and we can’t play it because we are committed to Dune," explained Gelfond in the earnings call.
"So, Dune moves will just go over to The Marvels, and having a Marvel movie as a backup is not the worst position to be in the world."
Dune: Part Two being pushed into 2024 frees up the slot taken up by the massive movie, which as stated by the IMAX CEO should be filled by The Marvels. That may be to the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie's benefit as it should have some time on the massive screens now instead of none at all.
Whether any of this potential success will affect
The Marvels is currently scheduled to release on November 10, 2023. Should that release date change, then this benefit may go to another movie.
